Diffusion Capacity Of The Lungs For Carbon Monoxide (DLCO) is a test that uses carbon monoxide gas to assess ability of lungs to transfer inhaled oxygen to bloodstream. It is used to diagnose diseases involving the above mentioned gas exchange phenomenon. Along with spirometry, DLCO can help physician in assessing lung health and aid diagnosis of various conditions and severity of diseases like Interstitial lung diseases, Pulmonary vascular disorders, Drug induced lung diseases, differentiate chronic bronchitis and emphysema, preoperative assessment for fitness for surgery. It can be also used as predictor of postoperative outcome in patients undergoing lung resection for various reasons
