Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, KMC Mangalore, is very academic and research oriented department with good number of research publications in standard journals. This department is functioning in two hospitals (KMCH Attavar and Government Wenlock hospital). KMC Hospital Attavar has LASERs and phototherapy machines which are used for a range of dermatological and cosmetic indications. Allergy tests both patch test and prick test are being carried out in the department regularly. Chemical peels are done both for therapeutic and cosmetic purpose. Govt. Wenlock hospital has abundance of clinical material, particularly in Leprosy and Venereology. A close interdepartmental coordination exists between department of Pathology, Microbiology and various other departments for academic activities.
Department headed by Dr Gatha M Upadya has very experienced faculty with 3 Professors, Dr Gatha M Upadya, Dr Pramod Kumar and Dr Maria Kuruvila, an Associate Professor Dr Kashinath Nayak and Dr Deepti D Souza as Senior Resident. The department has published many papers both in national and international journals of the speciality.
The faculty have conducted various clinical trials in different phases. Department regularly conducts guest lectures by inviting guest speakers. Continuing Medical Education programme is held annually, with a theme relevant at the point of time.
