Purushottam Kesar is a critical urban scholar focussing on the question of power and language in problematization of the urban question(s) in Indian cities. 
His scholarship has critically engaged with contemporary urban programmes such as the Smart Cities Mission, and city visions exercises such as Mumbai-2034, highlighting how institutions and actors maximise their interests in diverse settings. More recently, his work has turned to questions of informality, authoritarian urbanism, and urban commons.
