Abstract

Tissue engineering and three dimensional (3D) bioprinting are the forerunners of groundbreaking technologies that are revolutionizing the field of regenerative medicine and healthcare. Tissue engineering is a combination of biology, engineering and material science which involves scaffold fabrication, and cell seeding to mimic the functionality and the architecture of the native tissue whereas 3D bioprinting provides an opportunity to fabricate constructs in a layer by layer fashion with the deposition of cells and biomaterials. In this chapter, we discuss the various strategies of bioprinting along with the biomaterials used for development of the bioinks emphasizing on the bioink prerequisites and also the cells used. Additionally, we also explore the various applications in the field of biomedical and pharmaceuticals and several challenges of 3D bioprinting. Overall, the chapter will provide insights to the readers and introduce them to the world of tissue engineering and 3D bioprinting.
