Abstract
3D visualization of medical images plays an important role in the present scenario of the diagnostic healthcare. 3D rendering of medical data gives same potential as image guided surgery, which enables to see beyond tissue barriers in the surgical path Lesion localization and intraoperative guidance can be achieved by 3D visualization of Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. Proposed paper encompasses advantages and gaps in 3D visualization of brain CT and MRI images for better neurosurgical planning. All the medical images are archived in DICOM standard, it is also known to be DICOM images. Visualization Toolkit (VTK) is used to render CT and MRI data. Fixed point volume ray cast filter is used on medical images for neurosurgical planning. CT images gives better characterization of rigid structures and MRI gives better visualization of soft tissues. When volume rendering of CT and MRI is done different characterization can be seen respectively. Multimodal medical image visualization plays important role in neurosurgical planning. Proposed method gives better characterization of bones from CT images, but most of the neurosurgical cases are referred for MRI. Hence proposed methodology is better suitable for CT data.
