N2 - A comparative study of physical and mechanical properties of the different grades of Australian and Wilcock stainless steel wires is evaluated. All the grades (tempers) of wires are 0.016'' size except for the Supreme grade wire. The Wilcock wires included in this study are 0.016'' Regular, Regular plus, Special, Special plus, Premium, Premium Plus (Spinner straightened), Premium plus (pulse straightened), and 0.11'' Supreme (Spinner straightened) and Supreme (pulse straightened). A tensile test was used to evaluate the tensile properties of all the grades of wire. Five straight sections of each wire grade were subjected to tensile loading on an Instron universal testing machine having a load cell capacity of 100 kg. A two unit male-female fixtures were designed to test the amount of force required for a given deflection. The experiments revealed that the pulse straightened Premium plus wires can effectively overcome the deflective forces from mastication and can resist deformation in the oral cavity. The smaller size supreme grade wires can be effectively used in initial aligning phase.
