Abstract

A novel compact rectangular slot antenna with ladder structure for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications is presented. The antenna structure has a broadband frequency spectrum from 3.1 to 11.8 GHz. The fractional bandwidth of the antenna is 116.7%. The substrate used is FR-4 with 4.3 (dielectric constant) and 0.025 (loss tangent). The physical size of the proposed antenna is very compact, i.e. 14 × 18 × 1.6 mm3. The antenna's maximum gain stands at 2.2 dB and the antenna's efficiency stands at 69%. A stable radiation pattern across the operating band was observed in the proposed structure. The suggested structure covers the complete UWB frequency range including WiMAX (3.5 and 5.5 GHz), WLAN (5.2 and 5.8 GHz), and space and wireless communication services.
