Abstract

Hypocellularity of mastoids in patients with chronic middle ear pathologies is quite common. This study is to determine the correlation between the type and duration of disease and extent of cellularity. We also tried to determine the significance of the hereditary and environmental theories of mastoid pneumatization. This prospective study consists of 100 patients with unilateral middle ear pathologies over a period of 24 months. Bilateral x-rays mastoids (law's view) were taken for all the patients. The area was measured by using planimetry. Area of pneumatization was found to be decreased in diseased ears with chronic pathologies, when compared with healthy ears and ears with acute middle ear pathologies. The decreased pneumatization in patients with middle ear pathologies is attributed specifically to chronic middle ear inflammation and not to congenital causes or to otitis media in infancy.
