Analysis on impact of height criterion on the performance of Vee-Type folded plate cantilever retaining wall

The need for new techniques in the designing of retaining wall is the increased intent for being conservative. The behaviour of a concrete cantilever structure is often governed by the thickness and height of the structure. This paper presents the result of an analysis carried out in computer simulation software (STAAD Pro) on using the folded plate concept as a retaining wall structure. The aim is to reduce the limitations of the heights that can be economically achieved by a retaining wall. The Vee-Type folded plate cantilever retaining wall has been designed keeping in mind the parameters like height, internal angle, plate thickness, offset distance, cantilever beam dimension, fixity at the base. Effect of height of the wall on performance of the folded plate retaining wall is studied. Several models were created in the software using the principles of FEM to analyse the effects of the height parameter by observing the results such as Deflection, Mx, My, Shear stress. The FEM models allowed for the analysis of the behaviour of Vee-Type folded plate retaining wall. Analysis results show that Mx values for a 5m, 10m, 15m, 20 and 25m height retaining wall was 9.85kNm, 36.89kNm, 74.3kNm, 113.4kNm, 152.96kNm respectively. These Mx values results in achieving conservative dimensions for the Folded Plate Retaining wall. For a design height of 15m, the unit length quantity of materials are 6.36m3 and 15.75m3 for Vee-Type Folded Plate Cantilever Retaining Wall and Conventional Cantilever Retaining Wall respectively, which shows a decrease in quantity of 59.62% of concrete.
