Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of Phyllanthus niruri in rodent models

Abstract

This study was an attempt to explore the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of aqueous extract of Phyllanthus niruri in rodents. The analgesic activity of the aqueous extract (400 mg/kg and 800mg/kg) was investigated in hot-plate model, tail-flick method in rats and writhing model of mouse. Acute anti-inflammatory activity of Phyllanthus niruri was studied in rats by carrageenan induced paw edema. Cotton pellets were implanted in rats to study the effect on chronic granuloma. The aqueous extract revealed significant anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan model (p<0.001) and chronic granuloma models (p<0.001); and analgesic activity by both central (p<0.001) and peripheral (p<0.001) mechanisms in this study. These results suggest that the aqueous extracts of Phyllanthus niruri possess analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity.
