Abstract

Norfloxacin forms an inclusion complex with cyclodextrin. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the complex on E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus was better than that of the plain drug as evidenced from the reduction in the MIC value. The dose of the drug could be reduced considerably when it is used as dental implants compared to the oral dose in gingivitis. The complex was found to be more effective at a lower dose compared to the plain drug in such therapy as indicated by the reduction in the gingival index, pocket depth and relative abundance of microflora. Thus the promising results obtained may help in the clinical use of such dental implants in gingivitis for cost effective local drug therapy.
