Abstract

In this paper, an effort is made to enlighten the application of Neural Networks in the field of lighting system design. This is done in the evaluation of Utilization Factor, an important parameter to be determined before deciding the number, wattage and alignment of lamps for a given application. The approximations and assumptions made in the conventional design procedure may arise ambiguities to the consumer and hence may lead to poor results, in the field of application. The Neural network developed is not using any particular mathematical model and also it takes into account any type of non-linearity. The system provides an interaction between the man (i.e., consumer) and machine. The results obtained will be more accurate, reliable and generates confidence than in conventional methods. Therefore the customer will be benefited by the reduction of both capital and running costs. This also helps the electrical utility in proper energy management.
