Abstract
The increase in population in recent years has led to urbanization rapidly at the global level. Hence, the green cover was replaced by built spaces, roads, and other impervious surfaces. As a result, temperature variations occurred within the clusters of urban areas compared to peripheral areas. This chapter attempted to explain that RS and GIS tools can be used effectively to calculate the LST. This chapter explores the effective use of RS tools and GIS in monitoring and assessing the LST. The chapter also tries to demonstrate the changes in LST patterns and trends with the help of Land use maps. The combinations of different satellite datasets can give an accurate and clear understanding of changes in surface temperature and its dynamics with land use. RS tools and GIS will be essential tools for evaluating and assessing the variations in LST for rapidly urbanizing areas. Monitoring the land surface temperature continuously will help in policymaking, strategies to control temperature variations, and managing the urban landscape to create a healthier urban environment using remote sensing and GIS tools. Moreover, the integration of RS tools along with GIS will create a holistic approach to LST dynamics and formulate adaptive measures to mitigate the SUHI.
