Abstract
This cross-sectional observational study explored the nature of beliefs and practices regarding emergent literacy among 123 preschool teachers across two school types (private school and Anganwadi) in the Indian context. The findings revealed that teachers in both school types expressed strong beliefs in the role of emergent literacy in preschool and associated practices. Beliefs varied based on school type and teachers’ educational qualifications. The self-reported practices and quantity of time taken for emergent literacy activities were not influenced by the difference in school types, teachers’ experience, educational qualification or teacher age. The study details the implications for teacher training. Trial registration:Clinical Trials Registry India identifier: CTRI/2021/08/035639.
