Abstract
Optical sensors for biomedical applications have gained prominence in recent decades due to their compact size, high sensitivity, reliability, portability, and low cost. We summarized and examined a few selected approaches and technological platforms that enable the manufacture of various types of optical biomedical sensors in this chapter. The most representative cases were integrated optical biosensors and fiber Bragg grating biosensors. All of these could aid in the early detection of fatal illnesses, potentially saving a patient’s life. We outlined the advantages and disadvantages of all major sensor systems, allowing readers to select the best solution for their specific needs and requirements.
