Abstract

Corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete (RC) structures significantly affects the integrity and durability of RC structures, necessitating frequent repairs to extend their service life and leading to high maintenance costs. The bond between rebar and concrete is crucial for the structural integrity and inducing load-bearing capacity of RC structures. The present study focuses on the bond performances of ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC), pozzolana Portland cement concrete (PPCC), and alkali-activated concrete (AAC) with rebars of four different diameters (10, 12, 16, and 20 mm), subjected to accelerated corrosion. The durations of corrosion was varied from 72 to 288 h. The pull-out test was carried out before and after inducing corrosion to measure the residual bond strength. The effect of different durations of corrosion and rebar diameter on the bond performance of different concrete types was studied. It was evident that durations of corrosion significantly affects the bond performance of rebar with concrete. The 20 mm diameter rebar demonstrated higher residual bond strength with all types of concrete, regardless of the varying corrosion durations. Overall, AAC outperformed OPCC and PPCC, with all diameter rebars and different durations of corrosion.
