Brain computer interface for multiple application control

    Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

    Abstract

The technology used to create a direct link of communication between the human brain and a computer is termed as Brain Computer Interface (BCI). A BCI system can be of great use for people who are paralyzed from neck down and who cannot move any of their body parts. This paper presents the development and implementation of a BCI system, which enables the user to control multiple applications, such as switching a light and a fan, sending an SMS during an emergency and controlling a wheelchair. The working has been achieved using the Neurosky Mindwave headset. Parameters such as attention, meditation and eye blink values, produced from the headset, are used to carry out the various functions in the system. Eye blinks are used to switch between the three applications. The brainwaves acquired by the headset are sent to the computer via Bluetooth, embedded in the headset, and these waves are then used to actuate various devices based on the design of the code and the requirements.
