Circular Economy in Developing Countries Present Status, Pathways, Benefits, and Challenges

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Developing countries must shift from a linear to a circular approach to achieve decoupling. The circular economy (CE) is a crucial development paradigm for developing countries to manage natural resource and waste challenges while avoiding extra development that would increase the cost to the environment and natural resources for future generations. The circular economy in developing countries was thoroughly covered in the current study, along with other topics, including the definition of CE, its current state in developed and developing countries, policies to support it, its advantages, its implementation processes, the tools used to analyze CE implementation, and difficulties in implementing it in developing nations. The implementation of circularity needs to be implemented in developing countries in order to decouple growth for promoting sustainable development. There are ample opportunities to introduce circularity in various sectors of developing countries. Developing countries must invest in research to identify effective strategies for implementing circularity using tools such as lifecycle assessment, environmental product declarations, and material circularity indicators. There is a need for effective policies, proper supply chains, investment, stakeholder involvement, technological advancement, public awareness, and affection toward the environment in order to promote and successfully implement circularity.
