Abstract

The increase in population has led the rapid urbanization and the challenges facing urban water. It is projected that the worldwide urban population will nearly double by 2050. Already, there are major problems with urban water demand. The demand for water in urban areas is going to increase further and it causes water pollution, increased wastewater, etc. In addition to this, climate change plays a huge role in the urban water cycle. On the other hand, the rapid depletion of resources needed to sustain the water cycle has led to a circular approach to resource management. The circular waste management strategy of reduction, reuse, retrieving and recycling materials is the foundation of the circular economy (CE), a sustainable development method. Already, in many sectors, like the electronic, construction, and automotive industries, the CE has gained importance. Due to the risk of water scarcity and pollution, and the urbanization effect on the water cycle, the CE has major potential in terms of addressing issues of water demand, water supply, and urban water challenges. To overcome these challenges facing urban water by CE is discussed in this review.
