Abstract

This study aimed to design and develop a cost effective, portable tool as a software application with target games to identify the preferred retinal locus (PRL) in patients with macular diseases and train them using the novel Eccentric Viewing Training Module (EVTM) to further improve their visual abilities such as recognizing faces, reading speed. We have designed a novel software for identifying and training PRL by projecting a set of targets such as Optotype "E" in different orientations and sizes, bisyllabic words like CAT, MAT in different sizes using a laptop. The pilot study conducted on four patients (eight eyes) showed an improvement in visual abilities which was clinically significant for such short period of training for a specific duration and repeated seventeen sittings.
