Contribution of Long Noncoding RNAs and Other Noncoding RNAs in Cervical Cancer

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Noncoding RNAs are essential regulators of biological functions across cell types and tissues. Dysregulation of ncRNAs is linked to many diseases and cancers. Circular RNAs, microRNAs, and long noncoding RNAs are emerging as major contributors to human diseases. The majority of studies have concentrated on the relationships between human cancers and microRNAs. However, other ncRNAs, viz., circRNAs and lncRNAs, have also been recently identified as important key players in human cancers. In the present study, we provide an overview of the roles of ncRNAs in the pathophysiology of cervical cancer. Overall, ncRNAs other than miRNAs, particularly circRNAs and lncRNAs, also play vital roles in the initiation and growth of cervical cancer. ncRNAs may be promising therapeutic targets and biomarkers for the screening, diagnosis, and management of cervical cancer because of their functions in gene regulation and interactions with proteins and miRNAs. Gaining insight into the ncRNA–miRNA–mRNA network may help in the development of new chemotherapeutic medications and enhance the clinical care for cervical cancer patients in the future.
