Abstract

Across the world, asthma is a common condition treated by doctors. Lifestyle of the populations is one of the factors that strongly contribute to the exacerbation of asthma. This study was done to find the association between overeating and the triggering of asthmatic symptoms in preexisting asthma patients. The study also aimed to compare the effects of excessive eating in asthmatic patients and healthy individuals. It was found that among students with preexisting asthma, there was high percentage of participants experiencing asthmatic symptoms such as numbness of limbs (34.0%), shortness of breath (49.1%) and coughing/wheezing (54.7%) after overeating. The significant difference between the above symptoms experienced by asthmatic students and healthy students strengthened the hypothesis of this study. Therefore, this study concluded that there is a significant association between overeating and triggering of asthmatic symptoms among individuals with preexisting asthma.
