Abstract

Curcumin, known for its ability to scavenge superoxide and hydroxy radicals, has been shown to inhibit lipid peroxide formation in-vitro. In-vivo studies indicate that pre-irradiation administration of curcumin reduces radiation-induced toxicity and death in mice. Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), is one of the most widely used synthetic polymer, for controlled release preparations. Since curcumin is insoluble in water, curcumin microspheres using PLGA polymer were developed. Microencapsuation allowed slower release of curcumin, enhanced stability and greater radioprotective efficacy compared with plain curcumin.
