Abstract
In this chapter, we delve into the multifaceted landscape of cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities, with a specific focus on the insidious threat of social engineering attacks. We explore the intricate strategies employed by malicious actors to manipulate human psychology, often through flattery and deception, to breach organizations’ defenses and compromise sensitive information. By dissecting the psychology behind social engineering, we shed light on why individuals become unwitting accomplices and how organizations can bolster their defenses. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive framework of countermeasures and best practices designed to empower individuals and organizations with the knowledge and tools to thwart social engineering attacks and reinforce the critical importance of cybersecurity in today’s interconnected digital age.
