Abstract

In the present-day scenario, the advancement in wireless technologies is having two extremities, i.e., on one hand, high data rate and on the other hand low data rates. In this view, this paper aims to study one of the recent technologies called LoRa (Long Range), which works with low data rates, long-range and proposes interesting solutions to problems in IoT (Internet of Things) applications. Besides, this works at low power, where, data from various sensors can be collected from remote locations (typically battery operated). LoRaWAN is an open standard developed by LoRa Alliance, which is creating awareness on various use cases, also offering device certification programs. The protocol specifications of LoRaWAN are provided by LoRa Alliance with the help of a regional parameter document. With this motivation, this paper discusses an overview of LoRa and LoRaWAN. Also, various device types, chips used, several advantages, limitations, and potential applications are mentioned.
