N2 - The advances that have taken place in solid state lighting technology made white LED light sources suitable for general lighting application. They are very capable of being used to make excellent general lighting with sources that can replace many of the traditional lighting technologies in use today because of the fact that LED system offers high system efficacy, desired color temperature and long life. This paper presents the design of white LED array pattern as a light source using RELUX lighting software which can replace the 12w CFL used in solar powered home lighting systems. Analysis shows that 12w CFL can be replaced by 9w LED fixture without compromising for quality and quantity aspects of lighting. The design of LED array pattern and the power management topology employed to embed with LED source to prototype as a fixture is discussed. The simulated photometric characteristic is validated for the developed prototype. Simple comparison reveals that 3w of power saving per fixture is achieved thus showing the capability of LEDs as an energy efficient light source.
