    Abstract

In this paper the new method of current signature extraction is proposed. The method used non-intrusive extraction of feature (NIFE) it has been developed and reported for application in non intrusive appliance load monitoring (NIALM). The problem with intrusive extraction is that the consumers must agree to pay the cost of modification in their internal electrical installation (IEI). There is no guarantee that all consumers will agree, and certainly not in developing countries like India. This scenario is exactly the motivation for research under taken in this paper. We demonstrate, for the first time, that the existing IEI in Indian residences, as per specifications of Central Public Works Department (CPWD), a Government of India organization, provides a natural hardware platform on which NIFE can be easily implemented. NIFE then can be used with NIALM to achieve all the functions of smart meter, not only for just its basic goals stated earlier. We claim that implementation of NIALM with NIFE plus control operation has never been reported earlier.
