Abstract

Hearing loss is an inability to hear the sound. The assessment of hearing sensitivity is incomplete without administration of self-rated questionnaire. The questionnaire has become important and mandatory in order to know overall listening difficulties and benefits from amplify-cation. However, it is dependent on language, literacy and the background which is widely seen in country like India. Use of pictures in questionnaire will have advantages from patients as well as clinician’s perspective in terms of less language demand, faster means of eliciting responses. The aim of this study was to assess listening abilities using multidimensional pictorial questionnaire for adult with hearing impairment age group (19-55 years of age). In four phases the questionnaire was developed, validated and administered in order to see its benefits on 70 normal hearing sensitivity participants (19-55 years). Later, administration of the questionnaire was done on 15 participants with hearing loss ranging from mild to profound. Participants with different education background felt the ease while filling questionnaire. It gave patients a realistic view of his/her hearing level and helped in realization of importance of the hearing aid which will assist in the difficult listening environments. Multidimensional pictures made the task easy for the patient, assisted them in thinking about various situation encountered. It provided visualization of the situation faced and thus aiding in the process of selection of hearing aid.
