Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations and hospitalizations can be reduced through proper prevention and management. Identifying high-risk individuals early allows preventative measures to be taken. However, many COPD patients have difficulty adhering to treatment regimens due to insufficient disease knowledge, limited access to resources, and inadequate clinical support. Advances in digital health technology, like AI, telehealth, mobile health, and wearables, present opportunities to improve COPD diagnosis and care. These technologies can facilitate earlier diagnosis and better ongoing management, enabling patients to better understand and manage their condition. With a few high-quality studies, there is a need to incorporate research that minimizes potential bias and thereby build a more substantial and reliable body of research on eHealth interventions for improving treatment adherence in COPD and asthma, according to researchers. Furthermore, it is stated that future studies could benefit from standardizing adherence outcome measures, given the wide variety used. Additionally, if we start defining the measures of outcomes consistently and express the effect sizes instead of just statistical significance, it could result in clearer results. Overall, researchers indicated that more high-quality studies minimizing bias and standardizing measures are needed to create stronger evidence regarding digital health interventions for treatment adherence in COPD and asthma patients.
