Disparities in breast cancer incidence, diagnosis, and outcomes: current status and future directions

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related death in women, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. Patients diagnosed with small tumors have higher survival rates and lower fatality risks. Emerging technologies are focusing on the early detection of primary tumors, distant metastases, and recurrences. Nanotheranostics represents a promising innovation for efficient cancer management. Recent research highlights new trends and technologies in breast cancer diagnosis and therapy, showcasing significant progress in imaging, treatment methods, and theranostics. Future efforts are directed at improving breast cancer outcomes through personalized and innovative therapeutic strategies. However, early detection of breast cancer recurrence is vital for improving survival rates and ensuring timely treatment when the disease may still be curable. Current guidelines emphasize a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, medical oncology, and radiology. With most breast cancers in the United States diagnosed early, the primary focus of treatment is on curing the disease and preventing relapse caused by micrometastatic disease. Systemic adjuvant therapies, such as tamoxifen, chemotherapy, and hormonal treatments, are widely used to reduce relapses and improve survival in early-stage cases. While these interventions are effective, treatment for metastatic breast cancer primarily aims to improve survival and maintain quality of life. Advances in treatment include optimizing drug regimens, developing innovative therapies like HER2/neu antibody-directed treatments, and providing palliative care for advanced stages.
