Abstract

Diversity in the workplace generally denotes acceptance and ensures respect, despite individual differences. Among the various factors contributing to diversity, gender diversity has received much attention from scholars as the participation of women in economic activities has steadily increased. Although governments and organizations have recognized the significance of gender diversity in organizations, past literature indicates that women often face various barriers that restrict their participation. In the context of Arab Gulf states, social norms continue to hinder women’s roles in society. Although the significance of gender diversity and the involvement of women in the socioeconomic process of the United Arab Emirates are well recognized, academic research on factors that facilitate the career growth of female employees in the hospitality sector remains relatively sparse. This chapter presents a research framework based on existing scholarship on workplace diversity and women’s participation in the hospitality industry in the UAE, considering the void in the literature and the significance of the involvement of women in the growing hospitality sector. The proposed SPELL framework is expected to provide practical implications and directions for future research on women’s increased participation in the hospitality industry.
