Dynamic Threat Modelling and Vulnerability Assesment in Smart Microgrid

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

A smart microgrid is a localized system that is a scaled-down version of a smart grid that integrates power-related technology with information and communication technology in a controlled area, such as a campus, neighborhood, or small community. However, the network connectivity that empowers smart microgrids also introduces security vulnerabilities that make microgrid systems prime targets for cyberattacks. The attackers can target the microgrid system to disrupt energy distribution, and compromise the communication channel, which may lead to severe consequences for the local communities. In literature, significant research has been conducted on cybersecurity in broader power systems, but fewer studies have focused specifically on the unique challenges of smart microgrids. The localized nature and small scale of microgrids require customized cybersecurity approaches, which are still under-explored. The proposed research addresses the challenge of deploying reliable and efficient smart microgrids in real-world scenarios by introducing a dynamic threat modeling framework. The purpose of this framework is to simulate and analyze potential cyber threats to smart microgrids and assess vulnerabilities in terms of risk and impact. Significant progress has been made in the development and simulation of this dynamic threat modeling framework.
