Abstract
Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) is one of the commonest complications of pregnancy of our study is to assess the atherogenic index of PIH patients as compared to normal pregnant women also to compare the same between preeclamptic and eclamptic patients. Blood samples from thirty five PIH subjects and 25 normal pregnant women were collected for the study. Total cholesterol (TC) and HDL-C estimated. Atherogenic index (AI), TC/HDL-C was calculated.TC value of control group was 203.0 ± 20.37mg/dl and that of patients was 256.34 ± 32.78 mg/dl. HDL-C levels observed in patients was 42.12 ± 6.34mg/dl and 66.33 ± 4.73 mg/dl in controls. No statistically significant difference in the values was found between preeclamptics and eclamptics. Atherogenic index was significantly high in PIH patients. Disorders of the lipoprotein metabolisms occuring in PIH may be responsible for the fatty deposition in the vessel walls. This may predispose them for coronary heart disease in future. These patients should be followed up after delivery to see whether the lipid levels return to normal or these changes are permanent. Further studies need to be done to find the cause of the dyslipidemia at the genetic level.
