Abstract

Reducing electricity consumption in commercial buildings is important in addressing the growing concerns of global warming, carbon footprint, and energy security. The commercial building sector consumes about 8% of the total electricity generated in India and this is growing at 11%–12% annually (BeepIndia, 2015) .An energy audit is an effective measure for energy saving through identification of weak points of the institute energy usage to build up energy saving system. In this paper, an energy audit is performed in 10Th Block Boys Hotel MIT Manipal. The energy audit shows that the buildings have an average load of 43kW and the peak load of 84kW. To reduce the buildings energy consumption we have suggested the installation of PV systems on the roof top of 10th block building. By studying and comparing the data acquired from the Energy Bills and energy audit, theoretical calculations for PV design was carried out verified through PVsyst software. Financial and economic evaluation of the suggested system is carried out suggesting the Levelized cost of energy, the payback period of the PV system.
