Effect of psyllium (plantago ovata) on healthy weight reduction among adults

Objectives: Psyllium husk found to be rich in both soluble and insoluble fibres. Several studies suggested that higher intake of fiber in the diet help in weight management by giving satiety feeling and it also help in fat metabolism. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Psyllium husk supplementation on weight reduction among experimental group compared to control group. Methods: Men and women adults (N=50), experimental (n=25) and control (n=25) groups with BMI >23.00kg/m2 and aged between 20-50 years without any co-morbid conditions and were recruited the study. The experimental group subjects were supplemented with 5g Psyllium husk/day along with low calorie diet counselling, exercise and control group is given only low calorie diet counselling, exercise for a period of 93 days. Anthropometric measurements and diet recalls were taken pre, during and post study. Results: The results indicated that there was a significant increase in the weight loss by 1.295kg in experimental group as compared to control group (p<0.000). Conclusion: Fiber intake increases satiety and there by reduces excess food intake and helps in weight management. Subjects--- Obesity; Fiber rich diet in weight reduction; Food supplements.
