N2 - This paper deals with automatic generation control of an interconnected thermal non-reheat power system in continuous mode by employing a Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) in series with the line. Damping of the system frequency and tie-line power oscillations by controlling the reactance of the TCSC is presented. Gain values of the integral controllers are optimised using the integral squared error method by providing a step load disturbance in each of the areas by minimising a quadratic performance index. It is reported that TCSC can dampen the tie-line and power oscillations commendably under sudden load disturbances in any of the areas.
