Abstract
Exposure of Chlorella vulgaris to UV-B radiation inhibited the survival, growth, and contents of proteins, carbohydrates and pigments in C. vulgaris. Protein was more sensitive to irradiation than carbohydrate. The sensitivity of photosynthetic pigments to UV-B was in the order of: Chl b > Chl a > carotenoids. UV-B also inhibited ammonium uptake and glutamine synthetase activity. The degree of inhibition was enhanced in the dark incubated cells after UV-B treatment. Brief exposure to UV-B stimulated nitrate uptake. Instantaneous UV-B slowly enhanced the NR activity but enhanced it five times in 30h-dark incubated cells followed by 12h fluorescent light after UV-B treatment.
