Abstract
The absorption and fluorescence spectra of benzil were studied in ethanol solution and in a thin film and the transitions observed were assigned using molecular orbital calculations. An energy level scheme including four different conformers of the molecule is suggested. Benzil complexed with oxygen in solution and in a thin film causes the absorption near 300 nm to be much stronger than that at 260 nm which is opposite to the normal situation.
