N2 - The sheer rise in the usage of electricity each year in India has led the government to take up steps on the aspect of energy efficiency. To deal with the environmental issues concerning climate change and the issue of energy consumption, one of the common practice is by ensuring the use of electricity in an efficient manner and minimizing the wastage of energy consumption. The basic idea is to cut down the overall energy demand. One of the common practice to achieve energy management is to optimize the lighting system. This paper presents an evaluation on the efficiency of energy consumption for the lighting system in the Electrical and Electronics Department, Manipal Institute of Technology and propose a new lighting design with compliance to IS 3646 Standards to achieve the optimal use of energy. In order to achieve this goal, the bad practices were found out. Also, the payback period is determined according to the proposed system. The study of the data showed that the usage of LED lights could provide energy saving up to 32% as compared to conventional fluorescent lamps.
