Abstract

Detailed investigations were carried out on the distribution and enrichment of natural radinuclides in the high background areas of coastal Kerala. The activity of 232Th and 226Ra at all beach sands was found to be maximum at a distance of 20 m away from the water line except for Karunagapalli beach. The activity of natural radionuclides was determined in different size fractions of sand to study the enrichment pattern. The highest activity of 232Th and 226Ra was found in 125-63 μ particle size fraction. The 40K activity in beach sand samples was below detectable level in the most of the samples. The results of these systematic investigations are presented and discussed in this paper.
