Abstract

Epoxy-clay nanocomposite coatings are known for its improved barrier and mechanical properties. The paper reviews different techniques used for the synthesis of nanocomposite material and the characterization of epoxy-clay nanocomposite coating carried out by various researchers. Discussion on influence of nanoclay on corrosion resistance, water barrier property, mechanical properties , thermal stability and microstructure are presented. Microstructural analysis revealed that better dispersion is achieved at 1 wt% of nanoclay beyond which agglomeration starts to form and its size increases with increase in nanoclay concentration. Maximum corrosion resistance can be achieved at 1 wt% of nanoclay beyond which there will not be any improvement because of clay agglomeration. Water barrier property increases with increase in nanoclay concentration. Mechanical properties enhance with increase in nanoclay concentration, however it depends on the dispersion of nanoclay. Thermal Stability is maximum at 1 wt% of nanoclay, beyond which agglomeration leads to decrease in thermal stability.
