Experimental investigation into helical hole milling of fiber metal Laminates

Abstract

Drilling of multi-material fiber metal laminates (FMLs) is a challenging process. The challenges stem from serious issues like ply delamination, poor dimensional accuracy and surface quality, burr formation coupled with chip evacuation and serious tool wear observed during drilling of FMLs. Recently, helical hole milling process has gained popularity for making holes in metallic alloys due to several advantages it possesses over hole drilling process. Therefore, a comprehensive experimental investigation into the influence of process parameters viz. helical pitch, spindle speed and feed rate on the process responses viz. milling forces, surface finish, machining temperature and hole diameter during hole making in glass laminate aluminum reinforced epoxy (GLARE) FML is carried out. The process responses are analyzed and the findings based on the study are summarized.
