Objectives: Areca nut chewing habit has been associated with submucous fibrosis. However the pathogenic mechanism involved in developing OSF with areca nut is not clear. Therefore we assumed that OSF may be due to trauma caused by areca nut particles and thereafter is a result of repair. A study was done to investigate the possible pathogenic mechanism of fibrosis in OSF as a result of trauma from the chewing of areca nut to oral mucosa. Study Design : The sample of this study was categorized into 2 groups .group I had 28 subjects with OSF and had habit of chewing areca nut .and group II had 31 subjects with traumatic fibrosis (TF). Results: Fibrosis and blanching of oral mucosa was present in both OSF (100%) and TF (58%), but was generalized in OSF and localized in TF. Restricted mouth opening (93%) and xerostomia (54%) was seen only in It was found OSF. Histopathologically most of the epithelial and connective tissue changes were similar in both OSF and TF except epithelial atrophy in OSF (16%) which increased with its severity and juxtaepithelial hyalinization which was observed in all cases of OSF (100%) Conclusion: This study concludes that possible repair mechanism can take place in the connective tissue of both OSF & TF leading to fibrosis.
