Abstract
Genetic counseling is a relatively new area in the field of medicine; the horizons are constantly evolving to better accommodate patient needs. The roles and subspecialties within this field are rapidly changing. The pace of genetic discovery necessitates that counselors stay informed about specific diseases, cutting-edge testing techniques, and emerging treatment and surveillance options. The genetic counseling process is comprehensive, encompassing the creation of family medical pedigrees, the meticulous review of medical histories, risk evaluations, and the clear communication of complex medical and scientific information. Counseling also entails discussing management strategies for diseases, treatment possibilities, and testing options, all while guiding patients through the entire process, from diagnosis to rehabilitation. Genetic counseling in oncology is in its infancy in India, offering critical insights into hereditary cancer risks. With increasing awareness and advancements in genetic testing, counseling has gained importance in helping individuals and families understand their genetic predisposition to cancer. This chapter emphasizes on the Indian scenario of genetic counseling, where cancer incidences are rising, particularly in breast, ovarian, and colorectal cancers. Additionally, current practices of genetic counseling in oncology in India and case studies are discussed in detail. The challenges identified include limited infrastructure, lack of trained genetic counselors, cultural barriers, and the high cost of testing impeding its widespread adoption. Additionally, there is a need to increase awareness about the benefits of genetic counseling in rural and underserved populations. Furthermore, as India progresses in personalized medicine and precision oncology, integrating genetic counseling with public health initiatives will be pivotal in reducing the cancer burden and improving patient outcomes. Overall, collaborative efforts between healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities are essential for successful implementation.
