Green emission features of erbium doped lithium zinc borate glasses

    Abstract

Series of lithium zinc borate glasses doped with erbium (ZnF2-BaO-Al2O3-Li2O-B2O3-Er2O3) were prepared with successive variation of erbium concentration by conventional melt-quench technique. Their absorption and emission features were investigated. Increase in absorbance was observed with successive Er3+ doping. Emission spectra with 379 nm excitation showed a prominent green emission at 550 nm for 4S3/24I15/2 transition of Er3+. Calculated lifetime of this transition was 0.218 ms and branching ratio was 72 %. Color chromaticity coordinates of the glasses in the CIE diagram were clustered in the green region, recommending their application in green emission devices and lasers.
