Grey Wolf Optimization Assisted MPPT Technique for Total-Cross-Tied PV Array Configuration to Track GMPP under Shading conditions

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

Solar energy is well-liked as a type of non-depletable renewable energy, and photovoltaic power generation has received widespread attention. Under the changing external ambient temperature and sun radiation, it is challenging to determine the global maximum power point (GMPP) in the P-V curve. Hence this needs a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control for operating the PV system at GMPP. The issue of how to quickly, precisely, and reliably track the GMPP in PV power generation systems is at the forefront of current research. With the help of an MPPT controller, a PV system can be more efficient when operating in partial shadowing conditions (PSCs). This controller maximizes the electricity that a PV panel can produce and drives the load. This paper explores a GWO assisted MPPT method for maximum power harvesting under PSCs, in conjunction with a Total-cross-Tied (TCT) PV array system. In order to investigate the performance under four PSCs, this study is conducted in a Simulink environment. Finally, it is compared to Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Perturb & Observe (P&O), and Cuckoo Search (CS) using efficiency, tracking time, and maximal power harnessed as performance measures to ensure its competence. The results show that when compared to its competitors, the GWO-TCT scheme tracks the GMPP faster with less convergence time.
