    Abstract

The present study was carried out to reveal the gross and histological characteristics of esophagus of rabbits. The observations revealed that esophagus maintained its position dorsal to trachea throughout its course. The tunica submucosa was devoid of sub-mucosal glands throughout its length. The tunica muscularis comprised of three layers of striated muscle fibers extending from the pharynx to the cardia. The thickness of the muscular layer increased significantly from cranial to caudal direction. The keratinization of the epithelium increased from oral to aboral direction.
