Abstract

The problems brought about by traffic jams and a need for assimilating information for simulation, real – time control and communication networks has aroused the interest in Intelligent Transportation. A traffic light based on timer is the simplest way of controlling the traffic.A system for controlling traffic light by image processing and artificial intelligence is proposed in this paper. A camera is installed alongside the traffic light to capture image sequences. The acquired image is wirelessly transmitted to a computer using a memory card. Using low-level image processing modules and high-level adaptive neuro fuzzy based module the traffic data is analyzed. The control signal given by the adaptive fuzzy controller decides the order of a lane to receive the required traffic light signal. The designed controller is tested first with Software in Loop (SIL) and then in Hardware in Loop (HIL) simulations. The assimilation of plant models with a control model or code guarantees the needed precision as well as accessibility of the variables needed for controls. The SIMULINK model of the adaptive controller is implemented on C2000 microcontroller using Hardware in Loop Simulation.
