Abstract
The effect of the stem bark powder of T. arjuna on cholesterol-induced hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis was studied in rabbits. Cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid, levels decreased significantly. Although pretreatment with T. arjuna did not have any effect on serum lipid levels, there was a significant reduction in atherosclerotic plaque formation. Also the tissue lipids showed marked decrease.
