Abstract

Musical training can lead to changes in the auditory system, enhancement of cognition and can help musicians to understand speech better in the presence of a competing signal. Research reveals that background music played during learning can either boost or impair memory. The present study aims to assess the performance of musicians and non-musicians in the immediate auditory memory task in the presence and absence of a competing signal in the background. Results indicate that long term music training can augment auditory memory. Also, musicians can identify and store stimuli better in their working memory when compared to non-musicians.
